F Street Station
Anchorage
The feel
F Street Station opened in 1944 as the Mur-Mac Lounge, an Irish pub for the aviators who served the bush community. After the March 1964 Good Friday earthquake the building was torn down and rebuilt, and the name changed to F Street Station in 1983. The owners added a grill five years later.
Inside, nearly all the murmured conversation is about flying, and every surface without aviation art is covered in stickers. At one of the two bars, a block of Tillamook Sharp cheese sits with a cheese grater and a stack of napkins beside it. The room seats around 40 to 50 guests at high-top tables and padded swivel stools, so a wait for a table is part of the deal, though turnover is relatively quick.
