Roughly 8,000 numbered rubber ducks are dropped into the Chena River during Golden Days week and race downtown from the Wendell Street Bridge to the Cushman Street Bridge for cash prizes.

Alaska's oldest and largest ice-breakup betting pool: a tripod is set on the frozen Tanana River each winter, and the exact minute the ice breaks and stops a clock wins the jackpot. Running since 1917 and used by climate scientists to track breakup trends.
Ticket sales run February through early April; the tripod typically falls late April to mid-May. The 2026 tripod fell May 5, 2026.

A UAF homecoming-week tradition: student groups build and burn bonfires on campus the Friday of homecoming, a ritual dating to the 1930s tied to no-shower dorm life before a real bath.

Free daily ranger-led programs at the park entrance area through the summer: sled dog demonstrations, guided boreal-forest walks from the Denali Visitor Center, and evening campground talks at Riley Creek, Savage River, and Teklanika.
