Flattop Mountain Overlook
Anchorage
The feel
From the Glen Alps Trailhead the trail climbs through a small grove of mountain hemlock to timberline, crosses Blueberry Hill to a saddle, then steepens through talus fields to the summit. Paint marks on the rocks show the upper route.
If you only want the vista, a short path from the parking lot leads to the overlook. Fall is a popular time for berry picking on the slopes.
What to expect
- What it is
- A view over Anchorage, Cook Inlet and the mountains, reached by a short path from the parking lot, or from the summit of Flattop Mountain by a trail of 1.5 to 1.7 miles one way with 1300 to 1,350 ft of gain.
- Time
- About an hour to the summit.
- Crowds and best time
- Popular, with a lot of use.
- Parking
- The Glen Alps Trailhead lot at 3101 Glen Alps Road, at the end of Toilsome Road. Toilsome Road has a switchback and steep grades and may need four-wheel-drive or winter tires in snow or ice.
- Fees and passes
- A $5 fee or state parking pass is required.
- Dogs
- Leashed in the trailhead parking lot, and under control on trails and in the backcountry.
- Hazards
- The trail becomes steep near the summit and requires some rock scrambling. Climbers above can dislodge rocks. The summit is often cold and windy, and the area is avalanche prone in winter.
- Bathrooms and water
- Outhouses are open all year. There is no water source on the trail, so carry water.
- Season and access
- The Flattop Mountain Shuttle runs from downtown Anchorage to the trailhead between mid-May and mid November.
Mingo says
Pick a clear day, because the views take in the Alaska Range, Chugach Range, Cook Inlet and Anchorage. Come in fall if you want to pick berries on the slopes.
