Engineer Lake (Skilak Loop)

The feel

Engineer Lake is a refuge canoe-launch lake off Skilak Lake Loop Road in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. A short trail leads to the canoe launch, with a campground nearby, so the walk-in is easy and the setting feels wild.

The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, Arctic char and landlocked salmon. Crowds are low, and it is one of the smaller free campgrounds in the refuge.
