Upper Skilak Lake boat launch
Sterling
The feel
This is the upper ramp onto wind-prone Skilak Lake and its trophy rainbows, the main big-water access to the lake. A 26-site campground sits beside the ramp off the Skilak Lake Loop Road.
The lake's sudden glacial winds make this a serious-boat launch, not one for small skiffs. You troll, jig or spin for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, lake trout and sockeye.

Mingo says
Aim for June, when both rainbows and lake trout are in. Take a seaworthy boat, because the wind comes up fast.
Before you go
- Bring $5-10 per night for the campground.
- Confirm the launch fee before you arrive, since it is fee-based.
- Keep bait and multiple hooks out of the water within half a mile of the upper Kenai River inlet.
