Moose River (Sterling)

The feel

The Moose River is a slow, tannic tributary that meets the Kenai at Sterling. It is very slow and wide with almost no current, while the Kenai runs faster, which can make tackle handling tricky.

Access is easy at Izaak Walton State Recreation Site by the Sterling Highway bridge, with a boat launch, bank trails and a campground. Wading is easy on the gravel bottom, and hip boots or chest waders are useful. Sockeye stage here, and rainbow trout and Dolly Varden are also present.

Sockeye, 4-6 lb, in July and August. Rainbow trout, 10-16 in, in August and September. Dolly Varden are also present.

Single-hook rules apply near the Kenai confluence. The confluence has its own markers and dates. Verify before you go.

Tackle can be tricky to handle where the Kenai current meets the slow Moose.
