Ship Creek Salmon Overlook

Anchorage

The feel

Ship Creek runs through an industrial area owned by the Alaska Railroad, with the Anchorage skyline behind it. Foot trails follow the north and south banks, and along the trail you may see beavers, bald eagles and black bears.

At the overlook you watch salmon making their way upstream, and anglers line the banks to cast for kings and silvers. Portions of the fishing area are very muddy, and every year several anglers get stuck and have to be rescued before the tide comes in.

What to expect

What it is
An overlook on Ship Creek, a salmon stream with foot trails on both banks.
Crowds and best time
King salmon return in mid to late May, with the peak in June. Silvers arrive in mid to late July, with the peak in mid-August. Many people fish about two hours before high tide.
Parking
Take E Street north from West 3rd Avenue, cross the bridge as it becomes North C Street, turn right onto Whitney Street and drive about 1 mile to the parking area beside the overlook. Public parking charges a fee in season.
Fees and passes
Parking fees are charged in season. The Bait Shack sells fishing permits and rents rods, reels, waders and tackle.
Hazards
Never walk on the mudflats, because tides move extremely fast. Stay off railroad tracks and bridges, and obey parking and "No Trespassing" signs.
Season and access
Salmon are running from July through September at the hatchery viewing area.

Mingo says

Come in July for the silver run, or in June to catch the kings at their peak. Plan any fishing around the tide, since the mud and fast water are the danger here.
