Montana Creek (Talkeetna)

Talkeetna

The feel

Montana Creek is a classic Parks Highway salmon creek, and it is popular and easy to reach. You fish from the bank, with trails on both sides of the creek, from the Montana Creek Campground and from the Parks Highway bridge.

Kings come early, then silvers and pinks follow. The mix covers Chinook, Coho, Pink and Chum, and spin and fly anglers share the water with bank fishers. The campground is DNR-leased and sits at the Susitna confluence.

Mingo says

Aim for the early run if you want a king, and plan around its restricted dates. Come later in the season for silvers.

Before you go

  • Expect a campground day-use and launch fee, and confirm the amount before you arrive.
  • Check the current king opening dates by run, since they are restricted.
  • Bring spin or fly gear for fishing from the bank.
