Talachulitna River float for rainbow trout, Arctic Grayling, and Dolly Varden

The feel

This is a drop-off float trip from Judd Lake down Talachulitna Creek, then down the Talachulitna River to the mouth. It runs 5 to 7 days, starting with 16 miles of shallow Class I creek, then 32 miles on the river with Class I to IV rapids depending on water levels, and 13 more miles on the Skwentna.

The early miles mean a lot of boat dragging for a couple of miles, so small rafts and inflatable kayaks work best. You fish for rainbow trout and Arctic grayling, with Dolly Varden caught as well. The popular spots are the mouth, tributary junctions, the confluence with Talachulitna Creek and the outlet of Judd Lake.

What to expect

Water and access

Fly-in to Judd Lake by floatplane charter from Anchorage, Willow or Skwentna. Pick up is by float plane on the Skwentna River downstream of the mouth of the Talachulitna.

Rainbow trout, Arctic grayling and Dolly Varden. June to August.

Methods and gear

Small rafts and inflatable kayaks are best.

License and rules

Catch and release for rainbow trout. Sport fishing is by unbaited, artificial lure, single hook only.

Before you go

• Book a floatplane charter from Anchorage, Willow or Skwentna to Judd Lake, and arrange the float plane pickup on the Skwentna River.
• Pack unbaited artificial lures with single hooks; rainbow trout are catch and release.
• Bring a small raft or inflatable kayak.
