Talachulitna River (Skwentna)

The feel

The Tal is Southcentral's fly-water gem. You reach it by floatplane to Judd Lake or the upper river, then take a multi-day float down to the Skwentna.

It holds wild rainbows, trophy kings on the swing and a steelhead run, which few Southcentral streams have. It is managed for quality and fly fishing, and crowds are low. Arctic grayling and silvers share the water, and anglers fish it with fly or spin gear, from a drift boat or from the bank.

Species and timing

Chinook in June at 15-35 lb. Coho in August at 6-12 lb. Rainbow trout of 12-20 in in June and September. Steelhead and Arctic grayling are also present.

Fly, spin, drift boat or bank.

License and rules

Kings are largely catch and release. Verify current rules. The river is in the Northern Cook Inlet (Mat-Su) Area.

Low crowds.
