Alexander Creek (Susitna)

The feel

Alexander Creek has no road access. You reach it by powerboat up the Susitna or by floatplane from Anchorage or Willow, and lodges sit near the mouth. It was once Southcentral's premier road-less king creek.

The king run collapsed under invasive northern pike, and king retention is frequently closed. What remains is a silver-and-pink fly-in where crowds run medium. Rainbow trout and northern pike share the water, and anglers work it with spin, bait or fly gear, from a drift boat or from the bank.

Species and timing

Chinook in June at 15-40 lb, though retention is often closed. Coho in August at 6-12 lb. Pinks in July and August at 3-5 lb, strong in even years. Rainbow trout and northern pike are also present.

King retention is frequently closed, so verify the current emergency order before you fish. The creek is in the Northern Cook Inlet (Mat-Su) Area.

Medium crowds. The season runs June to August.

Come in August for silvers. Come in July or August for pinks, and pick an even year. Treat any June king as a bonus.
