Swanson River Canoe Route (Sterling)

The feel

The Swanson River Canoe Route is the wilder of the two Kenai canoe systems, with more than 40 lakes and 46 miles of river for paddlers chasing solitude and trout. It is a canoe-and-portage route, and portages run from a few hundred feet to over a mile. Most wet portages have been improved with boardwalks, though some still need work.

Fewer people go here than to the Swan Lake route, so crowds are low. It is a wild fishery, more remote than Swan Lake, and a few named lakes are fishless.

What to expect

Water and access

Access is off Swanson River Road, about 17.5 mi of gravel north into the Kenai NWR, or off Swan Lake Road. It is a canoe-and-portage route.

Species and timing

Rainbow trout in June, July and September at 10 to 16 in. Arctic char in July and August at 10 to 16 in. Dolly Varden, sockeye and coho are also here.
