Exit Glacier Campground

The feel

This is the only frontcountry campground in Kenai Fjords National Park: 12 walk-in, tent-only sites about 1/4 of a mile before the Exit Glacier Nature Center. Every site is reached by a short trail from the campground parking area.

A central shelter handles food storage, cooking and dining, because cooking and storing food in the campsites is prohibited. The area is frequented by many bears and park visitors, with frequent bear and human encounters, especially in early summer.

Crowds and best time

The campground frequently fills by early evening in July and August.

Parking and rig size

Tent-only; there are no RV campsites. You may not sleep in an RV, camper or other vehicle in the campground parking area, and overnight parking is not permitted anywhere else in the Exit Glacier area.

Fees and reservations

Free. First-come, first-served, with no reservations.

Dogs

Pets are not permitted in campsites.

Hazards

Many bears use the area, especially in early summer. Food storage is mandatory, and it is illegal to feed bears on purpose or by leaving food or garbage.

Vault toilets and a pump for drinking water.

Season and access

Open from mid-May through September.

Claim a site early in the day at the height of summer, because the campground fills. Expect bears around the grounds in early summer.

Before you go

• Call (907) 318-2040 for campground information.
• Do all cooking, eating and food storage at the central shelter, never at the campsite.
• Bring a tent, since there are no RV sites and no sleeping in vehicles in the parking area.
• Pack for two tents or eight people at most per site.
