Upper Troublesome Creek Trail

The feel

This is the southernmost and longest way onto Kesugi Ridge. Much of the southern end is forested, and above that the route crosses rolling alpine and subalpine terrain with outstanding views of Denali and numerous small glacially scoured lakes.

Most day hikers turn around at timberline, well short of the ridge. The full trail is a backpacking approach, and most people hike it north to south because that route has less total elevation gain.

Out and back, 23.4 miles total, with 2300 ft of gain; the trail is 11.7 miles one way. Forest at the south end, then alpine and subalpine terrain. Rated moderate to difficult.

About 11 hours for the out and back.

Day trips to timberline are popular.

Dogs

Leashed in the trailhead parking lot, and under voice control on trails or in the backcountry.

Hazards

Weather on K'esugi Ridge can change fast. Some trails may close for high bear concentrations.

Season and access

Seasonal closures can occur for bear activity and flooding. Open fires are prohibited.

Before you go

• Call the Mat-Su Area Parks Office at (907) 745-3975 for current closures.
• Carry navigation tools and warm clothing for sudden weather.
• Use a camp stove or a designated fire ring, because open fires are prohibited.
• For a one-way traverse, arrange pick-up or drop-off beforehand.
