X Lake Loop Trail

The feel

This is the most popular loop in Talkeetna Lakes Park. It circles X Lake through spruce forest and wetland, with boardwalk sections, a mile and a half from downtown Talkeetna.

The loop is a doubletrack with lazy turns and some long ascents and descents. Several stopping points along the way offer access to the lake. It is a short loop and family friendly, but it is shared with mountain bikers and people heading to the lakes for water sports.

Loop, 3.1 to 3.25 miles, with 143 ft of gain. Doubletrack through spruce forest and wetland, with some boardwalk sections. Rated easy.

The trailhead is off S. Comstat Rd.

Fees and passes

A $5.00 Mat-Su Borough day-use fee applies at the trailhead. An annual pass is $40.00, or $70.00 for a 2-pack.

A short, family friendly loop.

Hazards

The trail can be slick after rain or in fall when covered in leaves.

Season and access

Skate and classic skiing are offered in the park, so the trails are used in winter too.

Skip it right after rain or once fall leaves cover the path. Slick doubletrack makes the long descents harder.
