Slaughter Ridge (Gulch)

The feel

This is a steep, rocky climb with lots of scrambles, rising to a ridge above the turquoise Kenai Lake and the Kenai River. A prominent lookout comes early, 1.1 miles and 1,500 feet of elevation gain from the trailhead.

Beyond it the trail reaches Mount Juneau at 3,216 feet, where the views take in Kenai Lake, Kenai River, Cooper Landing and the surrounding Kenai Mountains. Wildflowers include forget-me-nots, lupine and violets, and the summit can be windy and chilly.

Out and back, 5 miles, with 2,600 to 3000 ft of gain.

Crowds and best time

Parking is very limited.

Parking

Turn right onto single-lane Stetson Road just before Bean Creek Road. It ends at an unofficial, unmarked trailhead; park at the high point in the dirt road without blocking anyone. If the lot is full, park off Langille Road.

Fees and passes

No parking fee.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome on a leash.

Hazards

The path is steep and rocky, and trekking poles are highly recommended for the steep descent.

Season and access

Typical season May to October. The trail faces south, so it often melts out earlier in the spring.

Use this one to open your hiking season, since the south-facing slope melts out early. Dress in extra layers for the windy summit.

• Bring trekking poles, especially for the steep descent.

• Do not block anyone in on the dirt road.
