Kenai River Trail (Canyon Overlook)
The feel
From the upper trailhead it is a short jaunt to the lip of Kenai River Canyon, where almost a mile of periodic overlooks look down on milky, aquamarine water. A couple of short side trails drop to the river edge along the way.
Past the canyon lip, a rough stone staircase leads down, and the trail winds through mature alder, spruce and willow. A few trees have fallen across the path. Eagles, mergansers, moose, river otter and beaver all live along this stretch of river.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Out and back, 5.6 miles total, with about 260 ft of gain. Canyon overlooks come first, then a rough stone staircase and a narrow but clear forest trail.
- Time
- 3 to 5 hours out and back.
- Parking
- The upper trailhead is on Skilak Lake Road, an unpaved road that sometimes has terrible ruts.
- Fees and passes
- No fee.
- Hazards
- Fallen trees across the trail; near the river the trail is often steep and slippery.
- Season and access
- Open all seasons. The upper trail stays open in winter and suits snowshoeing, but not cross-country skiing.
Mingo says
A shorter outing still pays off, because the best canyon views arrive early. Slippery, steep ground is common near the river, so watch your step.
Before you go
- Drive Skilak Lake Road slowly over the ruts.
- Bring the camera for the canyon overlooks.
- Bring snowshoes in winter, since the trail suits snowshoeing but not cross-country skiing.
