Vista Trail (Skilak)

The feel

Vista Trail rises from the shoreline of Skilak Lake to a rock outcrop overlooking the lake, bouncing up and down through old fire burn scars. It was built from 2000 through 2004 by Student Conservation Association volunteers and passes through the 1996 Hidden Creek Fire burn.

Views of the Kenai Mountains, Skilak Lake and the Chigmit Mountains across Cook Inlet open up from most of the trail, and Denali is visible to the north on clear days. Wildflowers are profuse in summer, and high bush cranberries and raspberries can be picked in August.

Mingo says

Pick a clear day, because that is when Denali shows to the north. Late summer adds berries to the walk.

Before you go

  • Plan for steep ground; it is rated strenuous despite the short distance.
  • Park in the boat trailer parking area at Upper Skilak Campground.
  • Expect no cell reception on the trail.
  • Check whether the campground road is plowed before a winter snowshoe.
