Barber Cabin
Cooper Landing
The feel
Barber Cabin is a 16 x 20-foot log cabin on Lower Russian Lake, surrounded by spruce forest and meadows with mountain views.
The Russian Lakes Trail starts at Russian River Campground, and the cabin is 3.4 miles from the trailhead, down a spur at mile 2.5. Lower Russian Lake has rainbow trout, and a rowboat with oars comes with the cabin. The area also has a particularly high concentration of bears.
What to expect
- Layout and setting
- One log cabin with bunks for six, a table, a wood stove, a splitting maul, a crosscut saw and an outhouse, with a boat and oars provided.
- Check-in and stay
- Check-in and check-out are at 12 p.m. The maximum consecutive stay is 3 nights.
- Parking and rig size
- The trailhead parking area is one mile past the entrance of Russian River Campground. Winter parking is at the campground entrance station.
- Fees and reservations
- $75/night. Reserve at recreation.gov or 1-877-444-6777, up to 180 days in advance.
- Hazards
- Bears frequent the area, so keep food and garbage in appropriate containers. Russian Lakes Trail has a high avalanche hazard in winter, and snow can remain on the trail until early June.
- Bathrooms and water
- No potable water, so bring your own, or treat or boil lake water before drinking it. An outhouse is provided.
- Season and access
- Year-round. At mile 52.6 of the Sterling Highway, turn into Russian River Campground and go 1 mile to the Russian Lakes Trailhead. The winter route is 4.2 miles and crosses the frozen surface of Lower Russian Lake. Access is closed to all motorized vehicles. The cabin is accessible to wheelchair users, with ramps at the front and rear doors, outhouse and boat dock.
Mingo says
Go in summer if you want the lake and river fishing. Winter works too, but plan for avalanche hazard and snow lingering into early June.
Before you go
- Bring sleeping bags and pads, a cook stove, cooking gear and food, since there are no mattresses, bedding or cut firewood.
- Carry a fishing permit, since one is required to fish.
- Call the Seward Ranger District at (907) 288-3178.
- Plan for the 4.2-mile winter route across the frozen Lower Russian Lake if you come in winter.
