Russian River Campground

The feel

Russian River Campground sits between the Russian and Kenai Rivers, with 83 sites on paved roads and spurs and no hookups. Water, tables, fire pits and dumpsters are provided, and a contact station runs 24 hours.

The Russian River is the most popular sockeye salmon stream in Alaska, and the area draws over 100,000 people a year. The Russian Lakes Trail starts in the campground, and most hikers go 2.3 miles to Russian River Falls, where a viewing platform shows leaping salmon. The Angler's Trail runs 1.25 miles to the Kenai-Russian River confluence.

Layout and setting

83 campsites and 130 day-use parking spaces, on paved roads and parking spurs with no hookups. Tables, fire pits and dumpsters are at the sites.

Check-in and stay

From June 10 to August 20 the stay limit is three days.

Crowds and best time

Summer sockeye runs draw the crowds. The coho season, from early August into late September, has fewer people.

Parking and rig size

Parking at the Russian River trailhead is $14 per vehicle for 12 hours.

Fees and reservations

$23 per night for a single site and $33 for a double, plus a Recreation.gov booking fee. Reserve through Recreation.gov or 1-877-444-6777, up to 180 days ahead.

Hazards

Bears are especially attracted to fishing areas.

Bathrooms and water

Water and flush toilets are on site, along with dumpsters.

Season and access

Generally open mid-May to September 30. The campground is on the Sterling Highway.

Mingo says

Pick your window by the fish. Sockeye retention is legal June 11 to August 20, and silver salmon are open July 1 to September 30. For a quieter river, come in the coho season.
