Crescent Creek Trail

The feel

Crescent Creek Trail follows the creek gradually upward through birch and aspen forest, climbs over a low ridge and drops into scenic Crescent Creek Canyon. The path alternates between open meadows full of wildflowers and forested stretches. It is well maintained, though it can be muddy in places.

The destination is Crescent Lake, which lies just below tree line. Grayling fishing is best in the western half of the lake, and moose, black and brown bears, and Dall sheep live in the area. Public use is moderate.

Level path with long gradual grades, 6.2 miles one way with 940 feet of gain. Rated easy to moderate. Downed trees can block the trail year round.

3 to 4 hours one way.

Parking

The trailhead is at Mile 3.3 of Quartz Creek Road, past the Quartz Creek and Crescent Creek campgrounds. Turn south onto Quartz Creek Road at Mile 45, Sterling Highway.

Kids

The primitive trail around Crescent Lake is not recommended for children.

Hazards

Moose and bears, and unbridged creek crossings that may be difficult in high water. The primitive trail around Crescent Lake is not recommended for bikes because of difficult trail and brush.

Bathrooms and water

Filter surface water before drinking, because Giardia could be present.

Season and access

Recommended June to October. Snow on the trail often persists into late spring, and the last 1.1 miles of Quartz Creek Road is not plowed in winter.

Mingo says

Ride after the late spring snow is gone and the trail has dried out. The meadows are best when the wildflowers are up.
