Cecil Rhode Mountain
The feel
Cecil Rhode Mountain sits in Chugach National Forest, just south of Cooper Landing, and the trail takes you up its back side. Once you rise above the treeline there is an expansive bird's-eye view of the Kenai River valley and Cooper Landing, and you do not have to reach the top for the views.
At the summit you can peer over the edge of a three-thousand-foot rock face. Mountain goats may be seen on the cliffs. The route is quite steep but short, and the ridge continues for miles for anyone who wants more.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Out and back, steep, on the western ridge, with 3000 to 3,300 ft of gain. Views open up above the treeline, and the ridge continues beyond the top.
- Time
- About 4 hours out and back.
- Parking
- Drive about two miles up the Cooper Dam dirt road to a gate; the trail starts past it.
- Dogs
- Dogs are allowed.
- Hazards
- The route is steep, and snow can stop progress along the ridge.
- Season and access
- Drive about two miles up the Cooper Dam road to a gate, walk 200 paces past it, and the trail starts on the left.
Mingo says
Wait for late summer if you want the ridge beyond the top. Snow has turned parties back earlier in the season.
Before you go
- Look for the Cooper Dam dirt road at about milepost 49.5 on the Sterling Highway.
- Walk 200 paces past the gate and watch for the little trail on your left.
- Plan on about 4 hours for the round trip.
