Upper Middle Fork Gulkana

The feel

The upper Middle Fork runs from Dickey Lake down to the confluence with the mainstem Gulkana River, but most of the fishing happens between Dickey Lake and Hungry Hollow Creek. Most anglers ride an ATV down the Swede Lake Trail, a well developed 10-mile trail that most any ATV can handle.

The trail continues past the Middle Fork River another 10 miles to Dickey Lake. Some people float the entire Middle Fork, but it is a long float with little good fishing below Hungry Hollow Creek.

What to expect

Water and access

River section from Dickey Lake to the confluence with the mainstem Gulkana. Most access is by ATV down the Swede Lake Trail at mile 16 of the Denali Highway: 10 miles to the river, then another 10 miles to Dickey Lake.

Species and timing

Sockeye salmon June 1 to Sept 30. Arctic grayling, rainbow trout and steelhead trout are present year-round. Whitefish are also here.

An ATV for the trail; floating is possible but long.

License and rules

Closed to fishing for king salmon. Hungry Hollow and the Middle Fork from Dickey Lake to an ADFG marker about 3 miles below Dickey Lake are closed to fishing from April 15 to June 14. Season and access

Open water species are present June 1 to Sept 30 for sockeye and year-round for grayling, rainbow and steelhead, with the upper closure ending June 14.

Plan your trip for after June 14, when the closed water below Dickey Lake reopens. Skip the long float and stay with the upper stretch.
