Klutina Lake Road 'Boys Camp' Milepost 21

The feel

This is an unimproved launch at the far end of a rough road, and it is the best launch for reaching Klutina Lake. The Klutina Lake Road, also known as the Brenwick-Craig Road, leaves the Richardson Highway just north of the Klutina River Bridge and runs to a point about 0.5 miles east of the lake.

The road is rough, muddy and rutted, with deep holes in the upper sections and large cobble and rock underfoot. Most 4-wheel drive highway vehicles can get through. The launch works for rafts and power boats at most river levels.

Species and timing

The Klutina is a major fishery for sockeye and trophy-sized king salmon, with kings sometimes weighing 50 to 90 pounds. Dolly Varden and Arctic grayling are also present.

Rafts and power boats. Trailering a power boat, especially anything over 18ft, is a challenge on this road but doable.

Season and access

Take the Klutina Lake Road from the Richardson Highway just north of the Klutina River Bridge. Expect several hours to reach this site with a trailered boat.

Plan a long day if you are towing a boat. Several hours of rough road come before the first cast.
