Gulkana River at Richardson Highway Bridge

The feel

This launch site was newly constructed in 2021 and has yet to be used in its new configuration. A side road to the west, 0.1 miles south of the bridge where the Richardson Highway crosses the Gulkana River, leads to it. The river is busiest with anglers on weekends in June and July, when the kings are running, and cold, wet weather is possible at any time.

Water and access

Launch on the Gulkana River, reached by a side road to the west at approximately 125.9 mile of the Richardson Highway, 0.1 miles south of the bridge crossing.

Species and timing

On the Gulkana River, the king salmon run starts in early to mid-June and ends quickly by mid-September.

License and rules

An Alaska fishing license is needed for the Gulkana River. It is sold online by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game or at agents in Glennallen, Delta Junction and Tok.

Crowds and best time

Fishing on the Gulkana River is busiest on weekends in June and July.

Hazards

Cold, wet weather is possible at any time, and grizzly and black bears live in the area.

Aim for a weekday in June or July if you want the kings without the weekend crowd. Call the Glennallen office first, since this site is new.

• Turn west onto the side road 0.1 miles south of the bridge.
