The lower Gulkana River extends from the BLM Sourdough campground (Mile 147.5 Richardson Highway) downstream to the confluence with the Copper River (32-mile section of river). The Gulkana is generally a clear water river with low to medium flow levels and family friendly floating. After heavy rain periods the water can be murky and difficult to fish. Although some anglers float the river down from Sourdough, most float from the Sailor's pit access point (mile 130 of the Richardson Highway) down to the Richardson Highway Bridge. Some anglers use jet boats to run upstream for 2 - 3 miles from the bridge or motor downstream (if water levels are high enough) to fish the mouth of the River. The area around the bridge provides for good king and sockeye salmon fishing. Most land along the river is privately owned by area Native Villages or Corporations and an access permit may be needed if you travel across these lands.
