Gulkana River Sourdough Boat Launch
Glennallen
The feel
It serves motorized boaters, including jet boats, and floaters, who use it as the take-out for float trips on the Gulkana Wild and Scenic River. Fishing guides use the launch, and visitors with mobility devices can fish from the launch area.
The launch can be shallow at times, but boats can usually be launched and retrieved without undue difficulty. The stop is busiest from about Memorial Day through mid-July, mainly because of king salmon fishing, and it quiets down later in summer once the salmon fishing eases.
What to expect
- Water and access
- Double wide concrete launch on the Gulkana River, reached through the BLM Sourdough Creek Campground at about mile 148 of the Richardson Highway. It can be shallow at times.
- Species and timing
- King salmon fishing is the draw. The running season starts in early to mid-June and ends quickly by mid-September, and fishing is busiest on weekends in June and July.
- Methods and gear
- Visitors with mobility devices can fish from the launch area.
- License and rules
- An Alaska fishing license is needed. It is sold online by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game or at agents in Glennallen, Delta Junction and Tok.
- Crowds and best time
- Busiest from about Memorial Day through mid-July; quieter later in summer after the salmon fishing subsides.
- Parking
- A gravel lot near the boat launch holds about 8 to 10 vehicles.
- Hazards
- Cold, wet weather is possible at any time, and grizzly and black bears live in the area.
- Bathrooms and water
- Four double vault toilets in the campground. Potable water is hauled to a central location at the start of each season.
Mingo says
Time your trip for the kings in the weeks after the run opens if you want fish. Come on a weekday or later in summer if you want elbow room at the launch.
Before you go
- Buy an Alaska fishing license before you arrive; river use itself is free.
- Camping is first-come, first-served at $15 to $20.00 per night, paid by cash at the kiosk or Scan & Pay.
- Allow for the small lot, which holds about 8 to 10 vehicles.
