Upper Gulkana Mainstem

Glennallen

The lower Gulkana River extends from the BLM Sourdough campground (Mile 147.5 Richardson Highway) upstream to Paxson Lake. Jet boaters access this section of river at Sourdough and can boat upriver for about 15 - 20 miles, but most only go as far as the West Fork confluence as the river shallows greatly above that point. Rafters float down from Paxson Lake about 50 miles over several days to pull out at the Sourdough campground. The river is generally clear and easily rafted from June through September.
