Tangle Lakes

The feel

Tangle Lakes are well known for lake trout and are the starting point for the Delta National Wild, Scenic and Recreational River float trip. The complex is made up of multiple lakes connected by the Tangle River, reached from the Denali Highway.

The road crosses the Tangle River at the lakes, with a BLM campground nearby. The summer fishery here is excellent.

What to expect

Water and access

Multiple lakes connected by the Tangle River. From the Richardson Highway, turn west onto the Denali Highway and drive 21.5 miles to the Tangle River bridge. A Tangle Lakes BLM campground sign follows the bridge.

Species and timing

Lake trout, burbot and Arctic grayling, year-round.

License and rules

Special regulations apply to specific lakes, so carry the current regulation booklet.

Crowds and best time

Summer is the excellent fishery.

A use-site is present where the road crosses the Tangle River.

Year-round fishing, reached from the Denali Highway.

Go in summer for the best fishing. The same lakes are also the launch for the Delta River float trip.

• Respect private property: some land in the area belongs to native corporations and other landowners.
• Pick up the current regulation booklet and check for emergency orders.
• Watch for the Tangle Lakes BLM campground sign just past the Tangle River bridge.
