Swan Lake Canoe Route (Sterling)

The feel

The Swan Lake Canoe Route links roughly 30 lakes by short portages in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge north of Sterling. It is a 60-mile connected route that reaches the Moose River, and it is wild water where a canoe beats any road spot.

Portages run from a few hundred feet to over a mile, across terrain from dry hills to muskeg. Most wet portages have been improved with boardwalks, though some still need work. Crowds are low.

What to expect

Water and access

Put in at the Canoe Lakes or Portage Lake entrances off Swan Lake Road. The gravel access road typically requires a high-clearance vehicle.

Species and timing

Rainbow trout, 10-16 in, in June, July and September. Dolly Varden, 8-14 in, in July and August.

Open Jun-Sep. The west entrance campground has 8 RV-only sites, open May through September depending on road conditions.
