Russian River Falls

The feel

You can watch sockeye rocket up the falls from a viewing platform, then fish the pools below. The trail starts at the Russian River Campground off the Sterling Highway and is evenly laid gravel with only gentle elevation changes.

Crowds are high, and anglers can stand shoulder to shoulder. Many walk to the falls and then fish downstream toward the Kenai confluence. Bears are always present, and this is prime bear habitat during the runs.

A 2 mile trail from the Russian River Campground, or a ferry, to the falls viewing platform and pools. The trail is evenly laid gravel with gentle elevation changes.

Species and timing

Sockeye (4-6 lb) run June to August. Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden are also here.

Fly only, with a single unbaited hook.

Fly-only sanctuary water. A State of Alaska fishing license is required. Verify open dates before hiking in.
