Jim's Landing

The feel

Jim's Landing is a boat launch on the upper Kenai River, and it is a very busy one for fishermen and guides. Miners first used the landing to reach claims across the river. Drift boaters commonly take out here, and a fence protects the revegetating riverbank.

Moose come to the water's edge early and late in the day, and brown bears and black bears are sometimes seen.

What to expect

Water and access

Boat launch on the upper Kenai River. From the Sterling Highway at milepost 58, turn onto Skilak Lake Loop Road; the landing is a few yards ahead on the left.

Species and timing

Sockeye June through August, pink salmon July through September, coho July through October. Dolly Varden and rainbow trout June 11 to April 30.

License and rules

Stay behind the fence that protects the riverbank revegetation.

Crowds and best time

Busy with fishermen and guides. Parking is most crowded during peak fishing season.

Parking

Parking areas close to the river can be full during the height of fishing season.

Hazards

Cold, fast water leads to a narrow Class III river canyon, for experienced non-motorized boaters only. Bears are sometimes seen.

Season and access

Sockeye from June, pink salmon from July, coho through October, trout through April 30.

Mingo says

Come for coho if you want a late trip, since that run is the last to finish. Arrive early, because the launch draws a lot of boats.

Before you go

• Look for the turn onto Skilak Lake Loop Road at Sterling Highway milepost 58.
• Keep clear of the Class III canyon downstream unless you are an experienced non-motorized boater.
• Stay behind the riverbank fence.
