Quartz Creek (Kenai Lake)

The feel

Quartz Creek is a clear creek that runs into Kenai Lake near Cooper Landing, with Dolly Varden and a campground you can fish from. You can fish from the campground and from the Sterling Highway bridge on Kenai Lake. Fly, spin and bank fishing all work, and it is not crowded.

The Forest Service campground has 46 campsites for tents and RVs, with drinking water, flush toilets, picnic areas and a boat ramp. Kenai Lake holds rainbow, lake trout and Dolly Varden, and rainbow and Dolly Varden are in the creek later in the summer.

Species and timing

Dolly Varden run 10 to 16 in, July to September. Rainbow trout and sockeye are also listed.

Small-stream limits differ from the main river, so verify before you go. Some tributaries close to protect spawners, so check signage.

Crowds and best time

Low crowds. June to September, with Dolly Varden best from July to September.

The lake is cold, and conditions can quickly change from calm to rough.

Aim for July through September, the months the Dolly Varden are running. Watch the water if you launch from the ramp, since calm can turn rough quickly.

• The campground does not take reservations through Recreation.gov.
• Check the current small-stream limits before you cast.
