Knik River access

The feel

The access sits at the end of the frontage road. Experienced boaters, mostly in airboats and jetboats, launch here to hunt waterfowl downstream in the refuge or to head upstream outside it. Rafters and kayakers sometimes pull out here after launching farther upstream, and kayakers sometimes launch here for trips downstream into the refuge.

The road in passes the Palmer Hay Flats and the Reflections Lake access. Tide levels change, river currents are strong, winds can be high, and submerged gravel bars are among the navigation hazards.

A launch at the end of the frontage road on the Knik River, reached by Knik River Access Rd past the Palmer Hay Flats and Reflections Lake access.

Species and timing

Chinook (king), coho (silver) and chum, June through August.

Hazards

Changing tide levels, strong river currents, high winds and numerous navigation hazards including submerged gravel bars. Only experienced boaters with local knowledge should operate boats on the Knik River.

Plan your run around the tide, because water levels here change. Go with someone who knows the river if you do not.

Before you go

• Drive the Glenn Hwy north about 30 miles, take the Knik River Access Exit on your right, and turn left on Knik River Access Rd to the end.
• Decide your stretch first: downstream is in the refuge and upstream is outside it.
