Kenai River, Soldotna bank

The feel

Centennial Campground in Soldotna has over a mile of Kenai River frontage, with river access stairs and two boat launches. Downstream, Swiftwater Park adds boardwalks, and both parks give the public bank access, so you can fish from the shore or the boardwalk. The crowd level is high.

Sockeye run 4-8 lb here in July and August, and coho 6-12 lb in August and September. Rainbow trout of 12-20 in and Dolly Varden are also in the river. Anglers work from the bank with fly or spin gear.

Water and access

Public bank access at Centennial and Swiftwater Parks in Soldotna, plus the boardwalk fishery. Boat launches at both parks, and river access stairs at Centennial Campground.

Species and timing

Sockeye in July and August, coho in August and September, rainbow trout in June, September and October, plus Dolly Varden.

Methods and gear

Bank, fly and spin. Unbaited single-hook artificial on much of the river.

License and rules

Check the current section rules. Sockeye and coho limits are set in-season by emergency order.

Crowds and best time

High crowds. The main window is July to early August.

Season and access

King fishing is often closed.

Aim for July through early August, when the sockeye run is on. Expect company on the bank.
