Jim Creek sockeye salmon fishery

The feel

Most of the fishing is at the confluence of Jim Creek and the Knik River, a sandy open expanse of riverbed. You get there by driving to the Jim Creek trailhead and following a gravel road 1.5 miles to the mouth of Jim Creek. Locals frequently ride ATVs and dirt bikes in the area, so expect motors as well as anglers.

The confluence of Jim Creek and the Knik River, a sandy open expanse of riverbed. Turn onto Sullivan Rd at about mile 10.5 on Old Glenn Highway, drive about 1.2 miles to the Jim Creek trailhead, then follow the gravel road 1.5 miles to the mouth of Jim Creek.

Species and timing

Sockeye, mid July to mid August. Silver salmon arrive from mid-August.

License and rules

Sport fishing is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning August 1. Check ADF&G for current regulations.

Crowds and best time

Sockeye are popular in early August.

Hazards

ATVs and dirt bikes are common in the area.
