Anchor Point beach

The feel

This is the westernmost point you can drive to, and you fish it standing on the beach. The access road runs to the tractor-launch beach at the Anchor River mouth, and long-rod surfcasting is the way it is done here.

Kings come through the shallow nearshore water in late May and June, when the season is open, and halibut are caught from the surf in summer. Dolly Varden, coho and pink salmon are also on the list. Crowds run medium.

Water and access

Ocean beach on Lower Cook Inlet, reached by the Anchor Point beach access road to the tractor-launch beach at the Anchor River mouth.

Species and timing

Chinook (king) in May and June when open, halibut from May through August, plus Dolly Varden, coho (silver) and pink (humpy).

Methods and gear

Bank fishing with spin and bait gear. Long-rod surfcasting.

License and rules

Early-run king seasons are heavily regulated, so fish them only when open.

Crowds and best time

Medium crowds. Kings in late May to June, surf halibut in summer.

Hazards

Strongly tide dependent, with big Cook Inlet tides.

Season and access

May to September. The Anchor River State Recreation Area at the mouth is open May through September.
