Halibut Campground (Anchor River)

The feel

This is a beachfront camp at the westernmost road-accessible point in North America, set right on the shore of Cook Inlet. Across the water you can see Mount Augustine, Mount Iliamna and Mount Redoubt.

Along the Anchor River you may find moose, beaver, mink, bald eagles and ducks. Out in the inlet, harbor seals, sea otters and beluga whales come near shore.

Layout and setting

30 campsites beside Cook Inlet, each with one picnic table, and beach access is part of the stay.

Check-in and stay

The camping limit is 14 days.

Parking and rig size

No RV size limit. Day-use parking is $5, and overnight parking takes two payments of the daily parking fee.

Fees and reservations

Camping is $20 a site. Sites are first come, first served with no online reservations.

Bathrooms and water

Accessible toilets and water are on site.

Season and access

May through September.

Aim for May through September, when the campground is open. Surfcasting from the beach is the activity to plan around.

• Bring $20 for the site and $5 for day-use parking, since you cannot book online.
• From the Sterling Highway, turn at Mile 156.9 onto Old Sterling Highway, then right on Anchor River Road.
