Savage River Loop

The feel

The loop follows either side of the braided Savage River as it carves a canyon between Mount Margaret to the west and Healy Ridge to the east. The trail stays near the river most of the time.

The first quarter-mile of the western half is around 2 feet wide and very flat. After that the path narrows and the ground gets rockier and more uneven. At nearly 1 mile you cross the river on a footbridge and come back along the other bank to the same parking area. Picnic tables are nearby, and mew gulls and squirrels are very persistent about stealing food.

What to expect

Route and terrain
Loop of 1.7 to 2 miles along the river, with a canyon and a footbridge at the midpoint. There are no major uphill sections. The surface is uneven and rugged in places.
Time
About 1 hour to 90 minutes for the loop.
Parking
Very limited parking at Mile 15 of the Denali Park Road. The free Savage River Shuttle also runs here.
Season and access
Not reachable in winter. Winter begins when snow falls, typically late September or early October.

Mingo says

Aim for the second or third week of August, when dwarf birch usually turns the valley red. Keep your food zipped up the whole time you are on the loop.

Before you go

  • Ride the free Savage River Shuttle if the parking at Mile 15 is full.
  • Keep groups to 12 or fewer, the limit in the Wilderness here.
  • Bring a closed bag for lunch at the picnic tables.
