Rock Creek Trail
The feel
Rock Creek Trail is an occasionally steep forest trail that connects the Denali Visitor Center with the sled dog kennels. Its highlight is ridge-line views of nearby Mount Healy. The path is generally 30 inches wide and runs uphill from east to west, with a grade of up to 15%.
It follows a similar route to the Roadside Trail but is a bit longer and much quieter, since it sits farther from the road. The trail is not a loop by itself, though hiking it together with the Roadside Trail makes one.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Point-to-point, 2.4 miles one way, with about 400 ft of gain from east to west. Forest path generally 30 inches wide, occasionally steep, with a grade of up to 15%. Rated moderate.
- Time
- 1.5 hours to about two hours one way.
- Crowds and best time
- Much quieter than the Roadside Trail, since it sits farther from the road.
- Parking
- At the kennels end, there is a parking lot at Mile 3 on the Denali Park Road with no RV parking. In summer, a free shuttle drops visitors at the Headquarters parking lot, a short walk from the kennels.
- Hazards
- Stay 25 yards away from all wildlife, except bears, and 300 yards away from bears.
- Cell signal
- Cell service reaches just beyond mile 3 on the park road, where the kennels are.
- Season and access
- The eastern trailhead is at the Denali Visitor Center or Murie Science and Learning Center, via the Taiga Trail. The western trailhead is at Denali Headquarters and the Sled Dog Kennels. The kennels are open year-round.
Mingo says
If you are heading to a sled dog demonstration, leave about two hours before the program begins. The kennels are about 3 miles inside the park.
Before you go
- The trail guide rates the trail moderately strenuous, 2 hours one way.
- In winter the dogs are frequently out in the park, so ask at the visitor center before you walk up.
- The parking lot at Mile 3 has no RV parking; the free summer shuttle runs May 15 to mid-September.
