Savage Alpine Trail
The feel
This is a strenuous alpine route that links the Mountain Vista and Savage River areas along the Denali Park Road, with steep sections up to 25% grade and wide open views. The trail is fairly narrow, a mix of compacted and loose gravel, and it lies almost entirely within designated Wilderness.
Because it is point-to-point, you walk it one way and ride back. The steepest section is at the Savage River end, so starting at Mountain Vista means a gradual uphill and a steep downhill, while starting at Savage River puts the steep climb first. On a clear day there are views of Mount McKinley.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Point-to-point, 4 miles one way, with about 1,500 ft of gain. Trail is generally 24 inches wide, fairly narrow gravel, with steep sections up to 25% grade.
- Time
- About three hours one way.
- Parking
- Parking is available at either end, though limited for personal vehicles at miles 13 to 15 of the Denali Park Road. The free Savage River Shuttle returns you to your vehicle, or you can walk about two miles along the park road.
- Kids
- Suggested for ages 8 and up.
- Hazards
- Steep sections up to 25% grade, with the steepest at the Savage River end. Mew gulls and squirrels will try to steal food.
- Season and access
- Not accessible in winter; winter begins when snow falls, typically late September or early October. Access to Savage River is variable in spring and fall, depending on snow conditions. Group size limit is 12.
Mingo says
Time the hike for August, when dwarf birch turns the slopes red. The second or third week of August is typically the peak. Check snow conditions first if you go in spring or fall.
Before you go
- Ride the free Savage River Shuttle to get back to your car after the one-way hike.
- Keep food sealed and close; mew gulls and squirrels are persistent.
- Keep your group to 12 or fewer, the limit in this Wilderness area.
