Mountain Vista Trail
The feel
This is a short, fairly flat loop on compacted gravel that begins and ends at the Mountain Vista Rest Area at Mile 13 of the Denali Park Road. The path is 6 feet wide with a 5% maximum grade and is ADA compliant.
The loop passes through the transition zone between taiga and tundra, with brush and scattered trees. You look over the Savage River Valley to the south and Mount Healy to the north, and on sunny days Mount McKinley shows to the southwest. Interpretive signs along the way show how vegetation and development in the area have changed over time.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Loop of 0.6 mile on compacted gravel with negligible elevation change. A short spur midway around the loop leads to the banks of the Savage River and is not part of the 0.6 mile.
- Time
- About 30 minutes.
- Parking
- Ample parking at the rest area. The free Savage River Shuttle also stops here.
- Kids
- Easy, flat and 0.6 mile, with interpretive signs and picnic tables, benches and restrooms in the area.
- Hazards
- Mountain Vista can be very windy and chillier than the park entrance.
- Bathrooms and water
- Restrooms are in the area.
- Season and access
- Not reachable in winter. Winter begins when snow falls, typically late September or early October.
Mingo says
Pick a clear day, because Mount McKinley only shows on sunny days. The spur to the river is short if you want to see the water.
Before you go
- Bring layers, since the spot can be very windy.
- Take the free Savage River Shuttle if you would rather not drive.
- Park at the rest area, where parking is ample.
