Denali Visitor Center
Denali Park
The feel
The Denali Visitor Center was built in 2005 and is the main National Park Service welcome and information center. The surrounding campus holds a restaurant, giftshop, bag check, bus stop and railroad depot.
Inside, you can talk with park rangers, watch the park film "Heartbeats of Denali" and explore the exhibit area, which includes things to touch like animal furs and a relief map. The building is often noisy and crowded, and train whistles carry in when the train arrives and departs. Quieter spaces are at benches outside and behind the center.
What to expect
- What it is
- The park's main visitor center, with rangers, exhibits and a non-narrated film of about 20 minutes on the seasons, landscapes and wildlife. Three short films follow each showing.
- Crowds and best time
- Often noisy and crowded. The film plays on a regular schedule every half hour, and the main center is open daily between late May and early September.
- Parking
- Ample day-use parking, with a small car lot and a separate RV lot on the northwest side of the visitor center.
- Season and access
- At the Denali National Park entrance area, mile 0.5 of the park road, off the Parks Highway. In winter only the Winter Visitor Center and Riley Creek Campground are open.
Mingo says
Visit in summer if you want a ranger-led walk, since programs run mainly from mid-May through mid-September. A free bus takes you from the center's bus stop to sled dog demonstrations.
Before you go
- Call (907) 683-9532; a ranger answers 9 am to 4 pm daily except on major holidays.
- For a sled dog demonstration, be at the visitor center bus stop 40 minutes before it starts.
- Leave the car at the visitor center, since there is no parking at the kennels.
- Register ahead for Discovery Hikes; other ranger programs are free with no sign-up.
