Mount Healy Overlook Trail
The feel
This is one of the steepest trails in Denali. It starts with a steady, mild uphill grade through spruce forest, and around the halfway point it reaches benches with an overlook back the way you came. After the benches the climb gets steeper, and switchbacks carry you up above tree line.
The trail ends at an open spot with great views to the south, and it is almost always windy there. With clear skies there are potential views of Denali. The surface is rough soil with rocks and roots, and the trail is generally 24 inches wide.
What to expect
- Route and terrain
- Out and back, 2.7 miles one way, with 1,700 ft of gain. Rough soil with rocks and roots, up to 25% grade, generally 24 inches wide. It is not a loop; you return the way you came.
- Time
- Around 2 hours one way uphill, and likely less on the return.
- Hazards
- The upper trail is very steep. Hiking the ridges beyond the end of the trail is permitted but can be dangerous, and people have died in falls on Mount Healy.
- Season and access
- The trailhead is off the Horseshoe Lake Trail, about half a mile from the Denali Visitor Center.
Mingo says
Pick a clear day, because that is when Denali may show from the top. Expect wind at the overlook either way.
Before you go
- Walk about half a mile on the Horseshoe Lake Trail from the Denali Visitor Center to reach the trailhead.
- Do not cut the switchbacks.
- Dress for wind at the end of the trail.
