Grandview Peak
The feel
A ridgeline walk leads to the summit of Grandview Peak, which stands prominently above Potter Valley. The route starts in mixed spruce and birch forest, then climbs a steady scramble over talus and low alpine tundra, above treeline.
It is short but very steep, and it is meant for experienced hikers. From the summit the views take in Turnagain Arm and Anchorage.
What to expect

- Crowds and best time
- Popular for hiking, mountain biking and skiing, with some solitude at quieter times. Best from May through September.
- Dogs
- Welcome and may be off-leash in some areas.
- Hazards
- Steep and slippery sections, especially after rain. Icy patches and windy conditions. Weather can shift rapidly above treeline.
- Season and access
- Snow cornices can linger into late spring. The trail is in Chugach State Park.
Mingo says
Pick a dry day between May and September, since the steep sections get slippery after rain. Check the sky before you climb above treeline.
Before you go
- Bring the ten essentials and bear spray.
- Wear sturdy footwear and bring trekking poles.
- Pack layers, because a clear morning can turn windy and cold above treeline.
- Bring cleats if there is ice.
