Flattop Sunnyside Trail

The feel

The trail switchbacks uphill on loose gravel to a small saddle between Flattop and the rocky comb of Peak 2. Side trails lead to Peak 2 and Peak 3, and the views are wide.

It was built as an alternative to the older, heavily eroded front-side trail, which ends in a scramble up steep rocks. That makes it the route recommended for kids and dogs. It is very popular, so expect other people on the way up.

What to expect

Route and terrain
Out and back, 3.4 to 3.6 miles total, with 1601 to 1,610 ft of gain. Switchbacks on loose gravel, steep and slippery in spots.
Time
About 2.5 hours.
Crowds and best time
Very popular, so expect other people. Typical season May to October.
Parking
A pay station and a small dedicated lot on the right, about 1,000 feet before Upper Canyon Road dead-ends. When the spots are full you park off the side of the rough, rocky road. The road may require 4WD and/or a high-clearance car.
Fees and passes
$5 (credit cards accepted) or an Alaska State Parks pass.
Dogs
Welcome, but must be on a leash.
Kids
Recommended over the front-side trail.
Hazards
Avalanche hazard in winter. Loose gravel can be steep and slippery in spots. Wind at the top can be gusty. Moose and bears have been seen on the trail.
Bathrooms and water
A porta potty at the trailhead, along with a trail map and a garbage can.
Season and access
Roads within Chugach State Park are subject to seasonal closure in winter.

Mingo says

Go between May and October, when the trail is clear of winter avalanche hazard. Watch the gusts when you reach the top.
