Bird Ridge

The feel

Bird Ridge is one of the steepest trails around. It begins as a steep ascent to timberline, then follows the ridgeline to Bird Ridge Point at 3505 feet. The views over Turnagain Arm and the Kenai Mountains are exceptional.

It is a popular hike, so expect to see many people. Because of its southern exposure it is the first snow-free spring hike in the park, with early wildflowers. The trail is exposed and windy.

What to expect

Route and terrain

Out and back, 4 to 5.2 miles total, with 3,350 to 3400 ft of gain. A steep climb to timberline, then the ridgeline to Bird Ridge Point, with some scrambling.

Time

About 4 hours.

Crowds and best time

Many people hike it. It is the first trail in the park to melt out in spring.

Parking

There are two trailheads: a small pullout at mile 101 of the Seward Highway, and the large Bird Creek parking area at mile 100. The two access trails converge near the pit toilets.

Fees and passes

$5, or an Alaska State Parks pass, at both trailheads. A credit card works at Bird Creek.

Dogs

Dogs must be on a leash in the parking lot and under control on the trail. Bikes are not allowed.

Hazards

Steep, exposed and windy, with some scrambling. At about 1.2 miles the trail splits around a rocky area, and both branches involve minimal scrambling. Snow can linger on the upper ridge through late spring, and the area is subject to trapping during winter months.

Bathrooms and water

Pit toilets sit where the two access trails converge. There is no water source on the ridge, so carry enough.

Make it your first spring hike, since it melts out first. Late spring can still hold snow near the top.

Before you go

• Pack a windproof jacket and bring layers.
• Wear sturdy footwear and bring trekking poles, because the trail can be muddy.
• Carry all the water you need; there is none on the ridge.
• Pay the $5 at the Bird Creek lot if you want to use a credit card.
