Flattop Mountain

The feel

Flattop is the most climbed summit in Alaska. The trail leaves the Glen Alps Trailhead through a small grove of mountain hemlock, reaches timberline and crosses Blueberry Hill to a saddle at the base of the mountain. From there it steepens and runs through talus fields to the summit, with paint markings on the rocks showing the upper route.

The views take in Anchorage, the Alaska Range and Cook Inlet. The upper section is steep in places with some scrambling, so expect to use your hands on the rock near the top. The summit is rocky and about the size of a football field.

Route and terrain

Out and back, 3.3 miles total, with 1300 to 1350 ft of gain; 1.7 miles one way through hemlock, over Blueberry Hill and up talus fields to a rocky summit at 3510 ft.

Parking

The Glen Alps Trailhead sits at the end of Toilsome Road, which has a switchback and steep grades.

Fees and passes

$5 fee or a state parking pass.

Dogs

Dogs must be on a leash in the trailhead parking lot, and under control on the trail.

Hazards

Steep sections with some scrambling, and moose and bears in the area.

Bathrooms and water

Outhouses are open all year. Purify stream water with a pump filter, chemical treatment or boiling for at least two minutes.

Season and access

Best from April 1 to September 30. Toilsome Road may need four-wheel-drive and/or winter tires in snowy or icy conditions.

Go between April 1 and September 30. The route is steepest through the talus fields near the top, so save energy for that stretch.

Before you go

• Pay the $5 fee or display a state parking pass at Glen Alps.
• Carry bear spray.
• If the climb is not for you, a short path from the parking lot leads to an overlook.
• Bring enough water, since stream water needs purifying.
