Little O'Malley Peak

The feel

The hike starts from the Glen Alps trailhead on the broad access trail just left of the pay kiosk and follows the gravel Powerline Pass road. It crosses a bridge over South Fork Campbell Creek, then continues on a boardwalk and up wooden stairs on Nintendo Hill to a saddle, with the high point a short distance to the left.

Wildflowers grow in abundance in summer. The trail is a great peak for less experienced hikers, and recent trips have seen plenty of families and hikers of all ages. Big Anchorage-bowl views reward the climb.

What to expect

Route and terrain

Out and back, 4 miles total, with about 1550 ft of gain. Gravel road, bridge, boardwalk and wooden stairs, then a final scramble to the summit. Rated moderate.

About 2.5 hours.

Crowds and best time

Popular with families and hikers of all ages. Typical season is May to October.

Parking

Glen Alps lot, the same lot used for the Flattop front side.

Fees and passes

$5 day use, credit cards accepted; an Alaska State Parks pass is accepted.

Hazards

Parts of the trail get muddy and slippery on wet days. Stay on the main path to minimize erosion.

Mingo says

Pick a dry day, because rain leaves the footing muddy and slippery. In fall, the viewpoint at 0.3 mile is a good place to spot rutting moose.

Before you go

• Pay at the kiosk: $5, credit cards accepted, or show an Alaska State Parks pass.
• The trailhead is at 13101 Glen Alps Rd.
• At about 1.75 miles, turn right at the sign for O'Malley Gulley.
• Come in fall for berry picking.
