Palmer Hay Flats Overlook

Palmer

The feel

Palmer Hay Flats State Game Refuge is a sprawling wetland of coastal and freshwater marsh, tidal sloughs, mudflats, lakes and streams, with upland birch forest around the edges. From the Scout Ridge overlook you look across the Hay Flats to upper Cook Inlet and the Chugach Mountains, with Pioneer Peak on the skyline.

The refuge was created in 1975 and protects 28,800 acres.

What to expect

What it is
Overlooks in a 28,800-acre state game refuge. The Scout Ridge overlook is an easy 400 yards along a surfaced trail, ending at a covered overlook. A 35-foot viewing tower stands on the northwest side of Reflections Lake.
Crowds and best time
Tens of thousands of ducks stop to feed during spring migration. The Scout Ridge lot is small and can fill up quickly on a nice summer afternoon.
Parking
The Scout Ridge lot is small.
Fees and passes
No parking fee at the Scout Ridge lot.
Hazards
Strong tidal waters near mudflats and waterways. Waterfowl hunting is very popular in fall.
Season and access
Refuge access roads get minimal maintenance and are not plowed in winter, so they may be impassible at times. The Scout Ridge trail is suitable for wheelchairs, as is the lower level of the Reflections Lake tower.

Mingo says

Aim for late April through May, during spring migration. In winter, moose move into the open, and a herd on the flats is not uncommon from the Glenn Highway.

Before you go

  • Call the Palmer Fish & Game office at 907-746-6300 for hunting seasons and regulations before a fall visit.
  • Check that refuge access roads are passable before you drive in during winter.
  • Expect the Scout Ridge lot to fill quickly on a nice summer afternoon.
  • Keep well back from mudflats and waterways, where the tidal water is strong.
